    Bio

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with over thirty years of experience working with individuals, couples, children (infants through young adulthood) and families. I received Bachelor’s Degrees in Elementary and Special Education and a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I also have additional training and experience in working with children, and am a Registered Play Therapist. I am certified by the Gottman Institute to teach “The Seven Principles Program for Making Marriage Work.”
I began my career working in a public agency serving infants and toddlers and their families who were considered “at high risk” for developmental or behavioral concerns and/or had special needs. I then worked in community mental health and private non-profit settings working with children, adolescents and their families. Additionally, I was a the Behavior Consultant for the Kidco Head Start Program serving Linn and Benton Counties for nearly two decades. I’ve provided training for various agencies, therapists, and the community regarding subjects covering a broad spectrum of interest related to children, families, parenting and couples issues. I’ve been in private practice in Corvallis, Oregon since July 1989.
My training emphasized viewing people in the systems they grew up in and currently operate in (nuclear and extended family, local community, culture influences, socioeconomics, race, spiritual/faith practice, etc.) and this informs my assessment of a client’s therapeutic needs. I have extensive experience working with adults who have experienced a wide range of developmental traumas.
I utilize a holistic and integrative approach to treatment, viewing my clients’ whole Self encompassing body, mind, heart and spirit. My approaches are ever-evolving; I value ongoing education. Currently, I employ a combination of evidence-informed trauma treatment, expressive therapies, energy psychology, and cognitive-behavioral techniques (you can find more specific information about these by going to my website: therapywithcindy.com)
I offer individual counseling for adults, adolescents and children (“talk” therapy and/or Play Therapy®), as well as family and/or couples therapy. If you have a concern about your child’s development or mental wellness, please know that NO child is too young to receive services. When working with children, I employ a whole-family emphasis. Therefore, when a child is the client who is identified to receive therapy services, the parents and extended family members will likely be involved in therapy as well. When working with adolescents, I have a slightly different approach in an attempt to create a therapeutic environment that will support your teen in being able to communicate safely and have psychotherapy boundaries well-defined. All of these things will be thoroughly explored with parents and a treatment plan developed before the child or adolescent is ever seen. Sometimes, parents need assistance in addressing the mental health needs of a child, requiring a different emphasis in our work together. Since I also have extensive training and experience working with couples, and they often have struggles related to raising children, working with them together on relationship dynamics may be a more helpful approach to address problems with the child/ren.
