Most clinicians have very little training or experience working with individuals who are diagnosed with autism or other developmental disabilities. Yet, these diagnoses are becoming more common and there is a pressing need for clinicians who can screen for autism and provide therapeutic support. This Eat-Meet-Learn presentation will be an introduction to autism screening and treatment. Learning objectives include:
• Autism screening basics
• Two major indicators that autism may be present
• Two major indicators that may indicate that autism is NOT present
• Three basic skills for working with a client with autism
• How to handle situations when you are “in over your head”
Dr. Clay has worked in the field of Developmental Disabilities for more than 25 years. He has been a direct care provider for individuals with autism and severe challenging behavior. He was also a case manager for several years, a protective service investigator, and now works as a therapist and autism evaluator at North Albany Wellness Center. He received a bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Oregon and a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University, and completed fellowships at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma and the University of Washington Medical School.
